Agios Nikolaos
The jewel of eastern Crete
About Agios Nikolaos Άγιος Νικόλαος
Agios Nikolaos, affectionately called "AgNik" by locals, is a chic coastal town built around the mysterious Lake Voulismeni — a bottomless lake connected to the sea. The town exudes a cosmopolitan charm with its waterfront cafés, boutique hotels, and crystal-clear waters. It's the gateway to the luxury resorts of Elounda, the historic island of Spinalonga, and some of the most unspoiled coastline in the Mediterranean.
A Story Across Centuries
The town is named after the Byzantine chapel of Agios Nikolaos, dating to the 7th century. The area was part of the ancient city-state of Lato, one of the most powerful Dorian cities in Crete.
Lake Voulismeni, the town's centerpiece, was believed by locals to be bottomless. According to legend, the goddess Athena bathed in its waters. It was connected to the sea by a canal in 1870.
In the 1960s, Agios Nikolaos became an international jet-set destination, attracting celebrities and artists. Today it maintains that cosmopolitan elegance while preserving its authentic Cretan character.
