Heraklion
The beating heart of Crete
About Heraklion Ηράκλειο
Heraklion is the largest city and capital of Crete, a vibrant metropolis that seamlessly blends its rich Minoan heritage with modern Greek city life. Home to the legendary Palace of Knossos, world-class museums, and a bustling waterfront, Heraklion serves as the perfect base for exploring the entire island. The city's Venetian-era architecture, lively markets, and authentic Cretan cuisine make every corner worth discovering.
A Story Across Centuries
Founded in the 9th century by the Saracens as "Rabdh el Khandaq" (Castle of the Moat), Heraklion has been a strategic Mediterranean hub for over a millennium.
Under Venetian rule (1204-1669), the city was known as "Candia" and became one of the most fortified cities in the Mediterranean. The massive walls built during this period still stand today.
The city is named after the Roman port of Heracleum, associated with the mythological hero Heracles. Today, it houses the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, one of the greatest museums in Greece.
