Knossos
Where European civilization began
About Knossos Κνωσός
Knossos is not just an archaeological site — it is the cradle of European civilization. The largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete, the Palace of Knossos was the ceremonial and political centre of the Minoan civilization, the first advanced civilization in Europe. Walking through its ruins is walking through 4,000 years of human history — from the legendary Labyrinth of the Minotaur to the sophisticated plumbing systems that wouldn't be matched for millennia.
A Story Across Centuries
The first palace at Knossos was built around 1900 BC, making it older than many of the world's great civilizations. It was destroyed and rebuilt more magnificently around 1700 BC.
The Minoans were remarkably advanced: they had running water, flushing toilets, paved roads, and a written language (Linear A) that remains undeciphered to this day. The palace complex covered 22,000 square metres with over 1,300 rooms.
According to Greek mythology, King Minos kept the Minotaur — a half-man, half-bull creature — in a labyrinth beneath the palace. The hero Theseus slew the beast with the help of Ariadne's thread. Sir Arthur Evans excavated and partially reconstructed the palace between 1900-1931.
