Rethymno
A Renaissance gem by the sea
About Rethymno Ρέθυμνο
Rethymno is the soul of Crete — a beautifully preserved Renaissance town where Venetian and Ottoman architecture coexist in perfect harmony. Crowned by the massive Fortezza fortress, the old town cascades down to a picturesque harbour and a long sandy beach. Narrow alleys reveal minarets next to church bell towers, flower-draped balconies, and some of the most romantic restaurants on the island.
A Story Across Centuries
Rethymno flourished during the Venetian period (1210-1646) as a centre of arts, literature, and learning. The city became known as the "Florence of the East" during the Renaissance.
The Fortezza, built by the Venetians between 1573-1580, is one of the best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in the Mediterranean and offers panoramic views of the city and sea.
The Ottoman occupation (1646-1897) added distinctive elements: the Neratzes Mosque (originally a Venetian church), Turkish baths, and the charming Rimondi Fountain still flowing in the heart of the old town.
