Chania
Where Venetian charm meets the sea
About Chania Χανιά
Chania is often called the most beautiful city in Crete — and for good reason. Its iconic Venetian harbour, pastel-coloured buildings, and the silhouette of the White Mountains create a postcard-perfect setting. The Old Town is a labyrinth of narrow alleys, artisan shops, and hidden courtyards. Beyond the city, Chania prefecture is home to some of Greece's most famous beaches: Balos, Elafonisi, and Falassarna.
A Story Across Centuries
Ancient Kydonia, on which Chania was built, was one of the most important cities of Minoan Crete, with evidence of habitation dating back to the Neolithic period (5000 BC).
The Venetians shaped the city we know today (1252-1645), building the harbour, the lighthouse, the fortifications, and many churches. The Egyptian Lighthouse at the harbour entrance has become the city's symbol.
Under Ottoman rule (1645-1898), mosques and hammams were added to the cityscape. The Mosque of the Janissaries at the harbour is one of the oldest Ottoman buildings in Crete.
