Elafonisi
Pink sand, turquoise dreams
About Elafonisi Ελαφονήσι
Elafonisi is consistently ranked among the best beaches in the world — and once you see its pink-tinged sand and impossibly turquoise waters, you'll understand why. This protected Natura 2000 site is actually a small island connected to the coast by a shallow lagoon that you can wade across. The unique pink colour comes from millions of crushed seashells mixed into the white sand. It's a landscape that feels otherworldly, like stepping into a painting.
A Story Across Centuries
The name "Elafonisi" means "Deer Island" in Greek, though today the island is home to rare plants and sea birds rather than deer. Over 100 species of plants have been recorded here, many of them rare and endemic.
In April 1824, during the Greek War of Independence, Ottoman forces massacred around 850 women, children, and elderly who had sought refuge on the island. A memorial stands on the island today.
Elafonisi was declared a protected Natura 2000 area due to its unique ecosystem, which includes rare sea daffodils (Pancratium maritimum) and provides nesting grounds for the endangered Caretta caretta sea turtle.
