About Spinalonga Σπιναλόγκα

Spinalonga is a tiny fortified island in the Gulf of Elounda with a history as dramatic as its silhouette. A Venetian fortress, an Ottoman village, and Europe's last active leper colony — all compressed into just 8.5 hectares. Made famous worldwide by Victoria Hislop's bestselling novel "The Island", Spinalonga draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year who come to walk its haunting streets and feel the weight of its extraordinary history.

History

A Story Across Centuries

The Venetians built the fortress in 1579 to protect the Gulf of Elounda and the eastern approach to Crete. Its strategic position made it virtually impregnable — the Ottomans could never take it by force, even after conquering the rest of Crete.

Spinalonga finally fell to the Ottomans in 1715 through negotiation. A Turkish community lived on the island for almost 200 years, building houses, shops, and a mosque within the fortress walls.

In 1903, the island became a leper colony — the last in Europe, operating until 1957. Over 1,000 patients lived here, creating their own community with shops, a cinema, and a hospital. Their story of resilience and dignity is profoundly moving.
