Vai
Europe's only tropical palm beach
About Vai Βάι
Vai is one of the most exotic landscapes in Europe — a vast natural palm forest of over 5,000 Cretan date palms (Phoenix Theophrasti) framing a turquoise beach that looks like it belongs in the Caribbean. Located at the northeastern tip of Crete, Vai is a protected nature reserve that offers a truly unique experience. The contrast of palm trees, golden sand, and crystal-clear water is unlike anything else in Europe.
A Story Across Centuries
The palm forest of Vai is believed to have existed since ancient times. Legend says it grew from date stones discarded by Phoenician traders, though scientists believe the Cretan date palm (Phoenix Theophrasti) is endemic to the region.
The palm forest covers approximately 20 hectares and is the largest natural palm grove in Europe. It was declared a protected area in 1973 after years of damage from hippie campers in the 1960s-70s.
Nearby lies the ancient Minoan settlement of Itanos, one of the most important trading cities of eastern Crete, with ruins dating from 1500 BC to the Byzantine period.
